Did you get a cell phone for Christmas? Why not recycle your old one?

Every year, Americans buy more than 100 million cell phones. Most of those replace older handsets, which wind up at the bottom of a desk drawer and, eventually, a landfill where toxins from their circuit boards, coatings, resistors, batteries, and plastic casings leak into the ground and atmosphere.

So what's an eco-minded gadget lover to do?

For now, the onus for recycling handsets falls squarely on the consumer. Groups such as the Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association trade group have encouraged carriers to develop recycling programs. But with the exception of some state and local mandates, they're not required to.

Want to recycle that phone and live in Las Vegas?

Participate in GURP (Geek Ultimate Recycling Program), and we will come and get your old phones for FREE! Contact GURP @ 433-GEEK (4335) or request a pick up on the web site.

Consumers recycle only 5% of phones each year, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Thrown-away phones represent some 65,000 tons of electronic garbage every year.

If customers recycled their phones instead, they would save enough energy to power more than 194,000 homes every year.

Do your part to save the enviroment!

Well, it's finally over. One of the most dismal shopping seasons in many years has come to a close (except for those pesky after-sales). The biggest sellers this season? Electronics. While it is great that people got new gadgets, TV's, and game consoles to play with, what do you do with all of the old stuff? The new buzz words are 'Reverse Logistics' or recycling. While not so simple in some places, in Las Vegas all you need to do is give GURP (Geek Ultimate Recycling Program) a call 433-GEEK (4335) or request a pickup on the site. We will come get it for free!

What types of electronics do we take? Here is a sample:

  • Monitors (CRT/LCD)
  • PC Systems
  • Notebooks
  • Computer Servers
  • Networking Equipment
  • Printers/Copy/Fax Machines
  • Scanners
  • Computer Components and Peripherals
  • Digital Cameras/Digital Camcorders
  • UPS
  • VCR/VCD/DVD Players
  • MP3 Players
  • PDA's
  • Cell phones/Phones

Now's the time to get rid of your old electronic stuff, while making sure that the enviroment is safe!

Most of us have seen the news reports and television shows about how our landfills are becoming toxic wastelands, not only here in the US but around the world. Some 'third world' countries are taking the hazardous waste from other 'more developed' countries and dumping it into large piles. Our electronic waste is a growing hazard as the world society embraces the age of instant gratification. Don't get me wrong, I am not against progress, but not at the expense of the environment in which we must live.

So what can I do?

That is the question we should all be asking. The answer is to recycle of course. There are few people in developed countries that have not heard of recycling, but for the most part recycling for the majority only includes paper, glass, and plastics. While these products should not end up in landfills, they should not be our greatest concern. Daily hazardous chemicals make their way to your local landfill in the form of old electronics.

Many people would like an alternative to dumping the items in the trash, but local waste collectors (for the most part) do not have the facilities to process e-waste (electronic waste), and the EPA can fine them if they are not licensed to do so. So again, what can you do? Well, check around your local city for a electronics recyclers. Not every city has one, but they are getting to be more common. Here in Las Vegas we have a several options. The larger chain stores will sometimes take your old electronics, UNLV has a recycling program, or you can use the Geek Ultimate Recycling Program (GURP) provided by Geek Internet Development. The UNLV program has been very successful this year processing over 1 million pounds of electronics that have been dropped off at the UNLV campus. GURP is a relatively new addition to the recycling scene, but rather than making you drop off the items (although they do hold recycling drives) they will allow you to schedule a pickup for free.Just provide them with a date, time and contact information and they will set it up for you. Now you have no real excuse for not recycling electronics in Las Vegas. GURP also has Super Hero's, businesses that have started recycling with GURP on a regular basis and ask their customers to do the same. You can become a Super Hero by contacting Geek Internet Development on their web site or by phone (702) 433-GEEK (4335).

What do I do now?

Well if you live in Las Vegas, set up a pickup from GURP. Don't live in Las Vegas? Then check out Earth911 and search for a recycling center near you! Save yourself, your children and the environment by recycling!
